Focus: Shooting/Passing Drill

Number of Players: 6+

Age: +U8

Level: Easy/Medium

Setup:

  • Arrange four cones outside the box, forming a “Y” shape with a distance of 5-10 meters between each cone.
  • Assign four players to each cone, and any additional players should line up behind the starting cone.

Why Use This Drill?

This “Y” Passing Drill with Shooting combines passing and shooting in a practical way. It simulates game situations involving an attacking midfielder and two wingers/strikers, helping players improve their first-time passing, movement, and understanding of in-game situations.

How It Works

1. Variation
The first player passes to the center player, who then decides whether to move left or right with their first touch. The center player then executes a one-two combination with the winger before taking a shot at the goal.

2. Variation
The starting player passes the ball to the central player, who immediately returns it. The starting player then plays a long pass to one of the wingers. The winger controls the ball with a first touch into the edge of the box and takes a shot at the goal.

3. Variation
The starting player passes the ball to the central player, who immediately returns it. The starting player then plays a long pass to one of the wingers. The winger moves inside the field and makes a through-ball to the other winger, who then takes a shot at the goal.

Other Key Points:

  • Make sure that either the player in the center or the winger moves toward the goal to receive any return ball inside the box.

  • Call out your teammate’s name when passing for better teamwork.

  • The drill should be seen as inspiration. So feel free to adapt the drill to suit your team’s specific needs or focus areas.
